We all knew, before album is recorded, that nothing new will be. We knew that before "Aftershock" too etc... From Motorizer they have nothing new to say, why they forcing to record new album I dont know. They could stop with Inferno, or Kiss Of Death and thats it, play gigs and thats it. They have a lot of albums studio and live they dont need nothing new to record. I dont like that too, recording all the time same songs. Stones cover acctualy I like a lot, great song, and which is sad but true, only fresh sound on album. I heard 5 songs, and thats what I heard in this half album. Cover song like this is normal for them musicaly speaking, its what they listen, its their influence or whatever, its much better to cover this or "god save the queen", jumpin jack flesh etc.... than "Whiplash" from Metallica or bands like that. I like The Head Cat a lot too, Lemmy said new album he have in mind but I dont think he will be able to do it. This album, which is sad, I cant wait to hear properly Stones cover and 'thunder and lightnin', rest of it doesnt sound nothing much interesting, I will wait to hear the other half and than see but I dont think I will be to much happy. Well, who knows, we will see...
Oh, "smiling like a killer" riff when I heard in "electricity" thats the worse thing, for now. One more thing about covers. Maybe they should do a cover album, and on this kind of regular albums to have only Motorhead songs. I dont know what was the reason to do cover at all, but, MAYBE they know they dont have nothing new to offer so they did some hit cover song to cover up a lack of inovation and to do cover hit song for bussines reasons to get to the more people and in media to sell album, because maybe they knew people will say "there is nothing new on this album.." etc.. Maybe all have reason.

I agree with your summary. Thank you. Though I wouldn't mind a bit of contradiction on here (if only to get some interaction going). Anyone else who'd like to share their view?

I had the box set on pre order from Amazon only to be told on Friday it would arrive Tuesday! That is not happening on my watch so I canceled and picked it up from hmv....any way side A is great love it...no not ground breaking but still its motorhead that I havnt yet overplayed so its great. There the best band of all time and any new material is good for me.They could do another march or die and I would love it for simply being new. However side b has a few of those american style heavy metal bullshit songs on it....when Lemmy does his evil vocals...stick to rnr...that stuffs like kids music. It will still get played to death. And as for stopping after inferno? That is fucking retarded.... Even the worst song on this album is better then lemmys best current live track....if Lemmy really wants to keep going till death then more of this please and leave the gigs alone.....its embarrassing..

I've given the album a few spins to let it settle, and I have to say I like it (it's new Motorhead after all) but I prefer the mixed bag that is Aftershock. I agree with much of what Cope and Regina say above. This album does seem full of sections that are very familiar and sound almost lifted straight from their back catalogue. I guess the album could well be described as formulaic or Motorhead by numbers.
One of the things I love about the band is that despite the fact they stick to the same path every album, they always manage to make them stand out as individual. This album keeps smacking me with MoD, Inferno, TWIY, and other albums, almost as if they were struggling to get the songs together so just reworked a bunch of old ones. Also lots of the songs sound too similar to each other. I also agree about Phil. If Aftershock was a triumph for his guitar work, this has the feel of a man forced to rush out a string of riffs and solos, and just dipping into his own body of work and pulling old ideas out to get the job done.
Overall it's still a decent listen, but for me the modern day run of 'classics' from Inferno to Aftershock may have come to an end. This is so far sitting mid table at best, which may change in time as often the albums improve with listens. That said often an album grabs me on 1st listen, and this just hasn't done that.
Probably 6 or 7 out of 10. Aftershock was easily a 9 just to compare.
Positive points, Lemmy sounds as great as ever despite his health woes, Webb does his usual solid job of making the band sound fresh and up to date without smothering the essence of Motorhead, and Mikkey is the same old metronomic hammer he always was. Standout songs would be SOAYL, Evil Eye, Choking On Your Screams, When The Sky Comes Looking For You.
As for Sympathy For The Devil, I find the bands covers are hit and miss for me but I do rate this as one of their better, more listenable efforts, but then it's one of the best songs they've ever covered IMO. That said I would have settled for 12 tracks and left this one out myself. Certainly not sure I would have closed the LP on it.
Special mention also for Till the End. In the last few years I have really grown to appreciate Lemmy's calmer moments on the albums. As his frailty becomes more exposed I guess the songs become more poignant, and this is no exception. Not the best of it's kind (I'll probably give that to One More Fucking Time or Lost in the Ozone), but still a great song given the current question marks over Lemmy's health and ability to perform.

Not enough English words to describe what I am thinking in Portuguese phrases... Summarizing .. . It is Motorhead ... as always. There's some deja vu in some songs? there is... but in the end I love it anyway. Unfortunately I had to download the album. ... It will take almost two months to get all the purchases I did... There will be a brazilian release by Sep 9th though. Imo ... better than Aftershock... awesome songs ... Choking on your screams... evil eye ... and again.. not into balad as the till the end. You guys need to remember I am not a native English speaker, so it is hard to understand what Lemmy sang without the booklet. What I want to say... We are luck to have one more album released by our beloved band. Ramones fans don't have it... just to pick one... Now I am more worried about Lemmy's health ... Cheers to all

Well, today was the day finally ? I have to say, after the first song I already knew I liked it better than Aftershock! (nothing to do with the 4 pints I had in the pub, honest!) The first half was good, but it really came alive even more in the second half - Choking On Your Screams jumped out as the outstanding track on both listens, along with Til The End, and Sympathy For The Devil, which I had mixed feelings about when I heard about a cover of my favourite Stones song, was fucking awesome!! I'm also glad they didn't end with Til The End, as some people think they should have - it was a nice touch to have a couple of arse kickers after a relatively tender moment! All in all, no it wasn't anything ground-breakingly new, but fuck it - it was Motörhead doing what they always do, and doing it fucking well!! Course, I'll have to listen to it again tomorrow minus the pints and the Jack Daniels to be truly objective but I can't see my opinion changing too much haha!

All in all, no it wasn't anything ground-breakingly new, but fuck it - it was Motörhead doing what they always do, and doing it fucking well!! I agree. I think the album is pretty rocking from 'The Devil' onward.
'Victory or Die' and 'Thunder and Lightning' are a good 1-2 combo. 'Firestorm Hotel' is non-offensive... It jams, but it took a while for me to get into it. I think Lemmy's vocals are tracked too many times in the chorus though. I'm not a big fan of 'Shoot Out all of Your Lights.' It reminds me of 'Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve' but I just can't get into the chorus on this one. It's too abrupt, I think. It's a shame too because I really like the speedy bits in the verses. 'The Devil' is great, but unfortunately I heard a sped-up version on youtube, and now I can't help but feel the album version is too slow...haha. Serves me right for listening before I bought my copy. I like 'Electricity' a lot. I'm not bothered by the riff-borrowing from 'Smiling...' The song goes somewhere different, and dare I say, I actually prefer 'Electricity.' 'Evil Eye' is one of my favorites. The chorus is funky and makes me want to dance. Enough said. 'Teach Them How to Bleed' has a cool rockabilly vibe, and is also pretty darn catchy. 'Till the End' is a solid ballad and the lyrics are quite nice. 'Tell Me Who to Kill' is a bit of a filler, but I like the simplicity. It's just a good solid jam. Good for grabbing another beer or packing a pinch of green. 'Choking On Your Screams' feels a bit like a faster 'Brotherhood of Man' but the second verse grunt and lyrics are goosebumps-worthy. The 'breathing deep your atmosphere' lyric is awesome. The solo is also pretty dark... Reminds me of the old atonal Orgasmatron days. 'When the Sky Comes Looking for You' is another rocker, and a good closer (if one isn't counting 'Sympathy for the Devil')...
Sorry to track-by-track it, but it's the easiest way for my brain to process it. This adds up to 7 rockers I really like, 3 that rock a little less hard, 1 ballad, and 1 meh. And a cover.
I think that places it below Aftershock, but above TWIY (which is truly one of my least favorite Motörhead albums). It leaves a similar sonic impression to TWIY, but the songs are stronger. I think Aftershock is a stronger album due to its variety and the classic 60s/70s vibe that some of the songs had.

Maybe if I hadn't been drunk when I wrote my review I may have made the connection myself! The whole album still sounds good today anyway, so all is well with Bad Magic!

After a few listens now I really like this album. Its more Motorhead than Aftershock I think.Yes Phil doesn't excel as much on this album as the previous album, which was probably his finest work, but theres still some good riffs there-just not the bluesy solos to match. Victory or Die is a great opener, while thunder and lightning is one of the stand out tracks. Firestorm hotel aint bad,but shoot out all of your lights is perhaps the weakest track for me.Evil eye and Electricity are ok and ive even disassociated the electricity riff with smiling like a killer now . Teach them how to bleed is another stand out track,Till the end is a very good ballad . In fact all of side 2 is excellent, and sympathy for the devil is a good as cover as any. How will it stand the test of time -I,m not sure. I loved Aftershock when it came out but rarely listen to it now.Much prefer the 4 albums before that and as this is in the same mould as them perhaps this can rate as highly as them, but as for now, its not up there yet.

As Marco said before, it's not easy writing my feelings in English (not that in Spanish I'm such a writer neither ). I've listened the album 3 or 4 times so far, and my opinion is that it's ok. There's nothing new on it, and I wouldn't expect it neither. I would certainly expect a little bit more guitar riffs creativity though. I think that's the lowest point of the album. 'Fire storm Hotel', 'Tell who to kill', 'Thunder & lightning' and 'Teach them how to bleed' are the ones I like the most. 'Sympathy for the devil' is a completely average cover version in my opinion. According to Lemmy, they recorded it by request of Triple H dude, then they end up including it on the album because they liked it. After all, I think it's a good album. There's another thing that Marco wrote and which I totally agree with. I love the expectation that a new album by our beloved band generates. It is terrible when you have the certainty that there will be no more new records of your favourite band. The same feelings that I have with Motörhead are the ones I have with a rock/blues guitar player from my country, named Pappo. (Which btw jammed with Lemmy a couple of times in the UK back in the '70s) He died after a bike crash in 2005. It was (and it still is) really terrible the emptiness of knowing there'll be no more new records by him. So I really treasure the effort that Lemmy do to record new music.

Listened through a few times now. I like maybe half of the songs.
A few thoughts:
Victory or Die - very similar musically to I Know How to Die with the guitar run from Coup to Grace thrown in. Really like this song despite that, thanks to what Lemmy brings.
Thunder and Lightening - Don't like this one. It's Burner with a lazy riff and shit lyrics.
Fire Storm Hotel - It's OK.
The Devil - Poor. Brian May is apparently on this but you'd never know it. Pointless cameo.
Electricity - Smiling Like a Killer rip off but a good song nonetheless.
Evil Eye - Reminded me of Make 'em Blind. Interesting song.
Til The End - Great lyrics and vocal but musically less interesting than their other ballads. love hearing Lemmy sing like this as he has a beautiful voice. Flange effect on guitar is not good.
Choking on Your Screams - A copy of Brotherhood of Man which was a copy of Orgasmatron. They went back to the well too many times for this track and then the "evil" vocals and shit lyrics make this a stinker.
When The Sky Comes - Possibly the best track on the album, along with Victory or Die. Ends too abruptly but a nice catchy song.
Sympathy for the Devil - Good version. Wish Lemmy wouldn't necessarily feel he has to put his growl in there as the parts where he sings are great.
The songs I haven't mentioned just didn't stick in my memory yet. I can't remember them right now.
3/5 for me. Not a bad album but near the bottom. A bit like Kiss of Death and Motorizer in that there are songs I like but songs I think are poor. Bad Magic lacks a classic though. Much as I hated a lot of tracks on those two albums, they had punch in the face songs like Sucker and Thousand Names of God. Bad Magic lacks that.

Another cracking album. I took a couple of listens and thought not sure but when I was in the car and no distractions realised how good it is. It's just what I like from Thunder and lightning to Till the end there are some classic songs which will stand up to the previous albums. Personally I think chocking on your screams is my favourite track. Only gutted because there are some great songs that will not get an airing live. Till the End playing at the moment and it's definitely up there with Lost in the Ozone, I ain't no Nice guy and One more fucking time. As Lem says when they stop there will be no one doing what they do!! Thankfully there legacy will live on.
