I'm not quite sure this is the right place to post this thread: should this be in 'other bands' or 'albums and gigs'? Anyway.
A friend of mine introduced me to doom - I've been a Sabbath fan for ages, so you could say I was an easy victim. I've known about Electric Wizard for a while, and I know Pentagram (which sounded like a Sabbath rip-off to me at first, but I actually quite like them now). Recently I've been listening to Snailking a lot - a fresh new Swedish doom-combo who have just released a great album called Storm (highly recommended - wonderful artwork, btw). The internet has taught me that stoner bands like Kyuss and drone like Sun O))) are related to doom, which - again - helps explain why I like this genre.
BUT. Doom (and stoner, and drone, and sludge) is about slow heavy rhythms. Still, I feel this sound is somehow close to Motörhead.
Which brings me to my question: are there any other doom fans out there, and could you point me to other doom bands, based on our common preference for Motörhead?

I like the ponderous quality of doom, though I'm no expert. As I mentioned elsewhere, I believe Nightmare/The Dreamtime is Motörhead doing doom, which should have around 50% chances of proving me incompetent on this matter. Bands: do Tool count? Do Mastodon? Album suggestions: 10,000 Days and Crack the Skye, respectively. Crack the Skye has The Last Baron, one of my all-time favourite songs.
As a side note, I happened to see Tool in Florence with Mastodon as opening act. That was one strange evening.
If you want a true Sabbath ripoff, check the band Orchid. The name comes from the Sabbath instrumental, so you know where you're headed. If you ask me they have potential but they try a bit too hard to do the vintage Sabbath thing, without actually getting Sabbath. To explain: Sabbath write about dreadful things while expressing actual dread, so you know they're the good guys, you know you can trust them; Orchid write about dreadful things and that's it, so you don't know what their stance is. They do have a talent for great melodies and riffs though.
Cope also likes doom if I remember correctly.
Have you seen Last Days Here? It's a documentary about the singer from Pentagram. It's intense.
Snailking is a truly impressive name.

I love how discussing doom actually generates long posts.

I love Tool. Went to see them live a few years ago in Brussels. Mastodon was the opining act, but our bus got stuck in traffic, and Mastodon was just leaving the stage as we got there. Never really got round to check them out afterwards, but will do so.
(oh, and that's sunn o))) - I was so busy counting the )'s I left out an n)

I'm not really a Doom metal fan and don't listen often to it, but I like 1 or 2 songs so once in a while but can't listen to a whole Doom metal album (no problem with Black Sabbath btw, but for me that's not really Doom metal). When I listen to Doom metal too long I get sort of depressed .... I immediately jump over to some speed or thrash metal, I just need that to feel better
I prefer fast/hard metal with speedy riffs and blistering solos and a not too clean vocals.
In the early days I used to like Candlemass, maybe because it was something different then, dunno ?!?!? A friend of mine is a big Stoner fan, or is that Doom too ? I've been told that the main difference between Stoner and Doom are mostly the Lyrics ?!?!? I went with him and some friends to The Graviators this year, not really my cup of tea, but the last song on their set was absolute amazing live !!!!
The Graviators - Druid's Ritual (Doom or Stoner ?)

Hi... big fan of doom metal here... not only doom... I love metal in general... Black Sabbath... never will consider than as a doom metal ... they have some slow songs ... but that´s it.. In this genre ... the most brilliant to me , Hielke just told above... Fucking Candlemass ... Messiah Marcolin is the godfather imo ... Some cool bands you could give a try ... Cathedral which does Doom and Stoner.... Early Paradise Lost. Pentagram, Eletric Wizard, St Vitus, Solitude Aetornus , In Solitude, Mammoth Love Trouble ... people say they are white metal ... not really ... Crowbar do a mix of doom and fast songs... have another obscure bands at home.. will post tonight. cheers Marco

I usually think of Sabbath as classic metal, or original metal as my own rating system goes, in that they literally invented the genre, though if you go by the general subgenre classification most of what they do is doom, i.e. slow, heavy, take-your-time dirges. So I guess original metal is actually doom metal, which is interesting as a perspective.
As an aside, 13 is such a sweet album.

Try SunO))) for some lightweight pop-riffs. Just don't forget the valium. And if that bores you too much try a defunct band called Marzuraan, there's some horrible stuff of theirs on youtube somewhere

Thanks , all. I don't know whether Black Sabbath would be doom, but it does seem to be the most important influence for most bands that qualify for the label. But, yes, maybe classic metal is more 'doom' than it is thrash.
