There are quite a few records in metal (and not-so-metal) history that evolve around a single character or historical event, like
1) OPERATION MINDCRIME ~ Queensryche
2) 7th SON OF A 7th SON ~ Maiden
3) THE DARK SAGA ~ Iced Earth
4) THANE TO THE THRONE ~ Jag Panzer
5) LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY ~ Genesis
.... and lots more like Grave Digger, King Diamond, Savatage, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Alan Parsons......
So what are your favourite story-telling albums then?

I love concept albums. They usually turn out, I think, with top quality. The artists need to squeeze their imagination, see.
Hmmm. One per band/artist, let's go.
1. David Bowie - Outside (my top album ever, incidentally) 2. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 3. Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare 4. Mastodon - Crack the Skye 5. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth

don't think i heard so much of concept albums. my favorite heavy band is king diamond so i would probably go with his stuff like abigail, graveyard, puppet master, fatal portrait and them
also i would ade excalibur by grave digger. got bit tired of other two albums from their middle ages trilogy, especialy tunes of war it's kinda overrated.
and yeah, welcome to my nightmare by cooper is classic, his only stuff i listen to, those last few tracks like steven totally show you where king diamond came from, especially in diamond's songs like sarah's night or two little girls and daddy

Another very interesting concept album by Alice is DaDa. I listen to that one surprisingly often. So eerie, so atmospheric.
Also, it's interesting how much of Alice's output is actually concept albums.

1. I agree with Legion: Bowie's Outside is 'hors catégorie' (as is his Diamond Dogs imho) 2. Frank Zappa, Joe's Garage 3. Lou Reed, Berlin 4. Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral 5. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
Frank Sinatra's 'In the Wee Small Hours' always gets to me, and I hear that's been called a concept album as well. And any Amenra album (personal favorite: Mass III)

tough to rate in order, I like 7th son but not my favourite
1. Porcupine Tree "The incident" 55minutes of genius about a car crash 2 Genesis "The lamb" 3 Jon Anderson "Olias of sunhillow" - so bad its brilliant 4Mstodon "Crack the skye" - fucking barmy concept and record, paraplegics/wormholes/Russia and the Zappa breakdown on the last track clinches it 5 Alice Copper "The Last temptation" - class 90s comic book concept album, feat chris cornell among others, my favourite AC album

Its a killer album Legion! I got it on day of release in Toronto, was on holiday there so seemed the right thing to do when saw it on a display. The solo on the first song Sideshow is one of my favourites, Alice at his finest

Sideshow really is a great statement. Welcome to my Nightmare for the 90's, eh. I had the luck to interview Alice in 2007 and he really had fond memories of the whole album.

How about this for a future concept album....Next year, Motorhead do an album based on their history, with songs for each of the members ("The Ballad of Fast Eddie" for instance) and those that are able to guest on it, with the final track being WE ARE MOTORHEAD with all of them on it, and Robbo taking the lead (well maybe not LOL)

That would be awesome. Huge potential to be both moving and tongue-in-cheek.

Operation Mindcrime is not only the greatest concept album ever made IMO, it's also one of the greatest heavy metal albums ever made.
Queensryche may not have ever even come close to this masterpiece before or after OM, but that album alone gives the band legendary status for me.
