If you'd listened to Arty Cope this woulnd't been too much news. And phils bad drumming is easy to spot, even for me, on Baby don't panic.

I remember Arty talking about march or Die and that all but one song (hellraiser?) were played by Aldridge. Ths is the first I've heard about 1916. My mate Munz will be gutted.

I know, it is a shame, but you only have to listen closely to the album, the drumming is just too good to be Philthy - as if "Yes I can record the songs but I'm incapable of playing them live".

It is a well known fact that Philthy had problems with his drumming at the end of his second stint with Motorhead. And with Lemmy, Wurzel, and Phil Campbell firing on all six cylinders the trio possibly felt that to bring in a session drummer to complete the album was the best thing to do.It"s been done many times before i.e Sid Vicious on Never mind the bollocks, Sid could"nt play a note he was there just cause he fitted in with what the Sex Pistols were suposed to be about.I saw the Pistols live with Sid and musically was way down the list, But who cared it looked good. Also the Ramones bought in other drummers to finish l.ps.The history books now tell of all the behind closed door antics of these bands and returning to Motorheads who drummed on 1916 this will in due time be told. The records to me are still great recordings regaurdless of If Philthy was on them or not.Possibly Philthy was kept in the band to the end just in the same way that Sid Vicious was all those years ago

Philthy - The Milli Vanilli of drummers... Oh, maaaaan. I love juicy stuff like this. Funny though - why wouldn't Aldridge bring it up? Seems reasonable to think that it's something that he could "brag" about. No one would believe him?

They managed to keep it relatively quiet for March or Die too.

Personally, I believe Philthy was involved in writing the album, and demos of songs, and that Tommy was brought in quietly to record the album - paid a wage on the proviso that he kept his mouth shut.
When Philthy returned after Pete quit, he was up for his old gig, and probably grateful, after GMT folded. He managed to record Rock n' Roll with no problems, but when they started touring again, the old habits caught up with him and he started fucking up. I think Phil Taylor's drumming was at it's best on Another Perfect Day, incedentally.
I do agree with DUNK that regardless of who drummed, 1916 is a fucking good album.

Hmmmmm, never really thought of it as underrated before, when you look at the albums immediately released before and after 1916, I would have thought it would stand out as a much better album, which I think it is.

I know, but the word on the street usually dismisses it as a minor album.

I listened to a couple of tracks from 1916 today in the car and the drumming is remarkably one dimensional. Powerful but a very basic beat, hardly changing. Similar to March or Die.

Well first post on this website. Hello! good to be here. Some familiar names I recognize. Sounds like alot more informed chat than some other places and I get fed up with "if lemmy was a hamster" type questions. I've got a long history of being a fan of this band. I saw them when I was 13yrs old back in 1979 on the Bomber tour. seen all the line ups cept Robbo. Met Lemmy and the band a couple of times and have been lucky enough to spend the day with Lemmy when they come thru town. I gotta say I don't believe that Philthy didn't play on this album. Thing is He played on the 1916 tour which I saw live and he plays a number of tracks from it. He's playing on trax from it on the Everything louder video of that 1916 tour. I reckon the drumming IS Philthy. Thing is......I have never heard this before in all my 25 years of being a MH fan. It has never been talked about on the imotorhead site although that doesn't mean anything or the Yahoo group. Doesn't mean its not true but I'm having a hard time believing it. "Angel city" is classic philthy drumming style as is "No voices" (fast and twitchy) In fact I hear Phils drumming on all of it. So lets hear more.
