Slayer is surely one of greatest bands that ever came around, but also one of the most overated ones because they also released bunch of shit turds which fanboys blindly praise for no reason.
At this moment, i own everything i like by Slayer and that is next: show no mercy - great heavy metal record with huge nwobhm influence on its sound. surelly more likeable by fans of classic heavy metal
haunting the chapel/live undead - this is where things started to get more extreme and band started creating their own sound
hell awaits - classic EVIL thrash with production that sounds like album was recorded in the cave. kinda proto death metal
reign in blood - 30 minutes of superduper mix of metal and hardcore punk. while music is slayer, this is definetly album with punk attitude in its execution. its played in neckbreaking speed, something like D.R.I. used to do. This is definetly defining slayer record and one of a kind album which will never be recorded again. in my opinion most intensive album ever along with my war by black flag and legion by deicide. also probably best produced metal album ever.
south of heaven - slayer went from speedracing to cruisin down the streest like goddamn eazy-e here. again, this is production - wise best album along with reign in blood. crystal clear yet evil, while first two studio records and EP were more lo-fi in the vein of first venom album. Good album with classic tunes like South of heaven and mandatory suicide. Also, silent scream is among the best tracks ever. Sadly, album's flow never menaged to hold me like reign in blood. Also contains judas priest cover for classicheads.
seasons in the abyss - mix of last two. widely known as last true classic slayer record. Contains tracks that go from neckbreaking speeds like war ensemble to the some of the slowest stuff like dead skin mask. this is very easy to get into album and definetly great recommendation for slayer begginers. title track is classic and probably the most versatile slayer tune ever.
undisputed attitude - hardcore punk record! cover record where they perform tracks by minor threat, d.i., dr know, verbal abuse, stooges, d.r.i. and jeff hanemman's never released punk tracks. only true slayer song is the last one. in my opinion great album, especially for verbal abuse fans since they performed like the half of their first record here. some versions also contain sick boy cover by GBH. while mostly regarded as bad album, i find it as one of most enjoyable slayer moments ever! spiritual law cover is fucking great.
world painted blood- their latest album, at least for few more days when the "repentless" will be out. Suprisingly good album. Title track is great gig opener and among the other tracks there is quite few creepy tunes like playing with the dolls, human strain and beauty through order for fans of south of heaven and seasons in the abyss. hate worldwid and psychopaty red are for those who like tracks like war ensemble and raining blood. americon is kinda great for such dumb song. "it's all about the muthafucking oil" is definetly not the line you would expect in slayer song but it somehow works instead of their other dumb lyrics which we had chance to see on later albums.
Now talking about records i don't like and i won't use too much words here
divine intervention - this is actually not so bad album, but it has sound which i could never digest. so it's more production than songwriting problem here
and now unholy trinity of crap: diabolus in musica, god hates us all and christ illusion are really crap records. and i mean reaaaallllyyyyy crap. uninspiring, bland, boring. only 2 songs i like here is god send death and disciple. and disciple is like stupid but fun as a live song.
about the new record: unfortunately from what i heard i have nothing to expect, i will probably not waste my time on this record. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
now,
it's not so big problem that slayer has been crap for 20 years (considering that undisputed attitude is cover record), but what annoys me is the fact that people usually talk like "yeah they are not so great but at least they play thrash and didn't change their style like metallica did" and that's kinda retarded because i would rather listen to great hard rock album than bad thrash album.
so for lot of people it's more about the style and posing instead of quality of music, and slayer didn't have too much of latter one in last 2 decades.
fact is that band also became brand and we have slayer condoms, wines, beach towels and other retarded merch, but it is somehow not the theme of shameful money making conversations, while metallica and kiss get such shit from rock fans.
yes, slayer was definetly most extreme huge band out there, but come on, that doesn't make them immune to releasing crap music and merch.
bad music is bad music, no matter of style.
i dunno how to end this but i guess u see my opinion of slayer, which is still one of my favorite bands. but i refuse to be fanboy. i even refuse to be fanboy of motorhead as i quite few times criticised the world is yours, motorizer and last live albums on this and old forum.
i am not immune to the liking of senseless and stupid lyrics (hell, i am fan of autopsy and especially their "shitfun" record), but there is something that could be best described by the seinfled episode about good and bad nudity. So while i will definetly buy another autopsy record with tongue in cheek lyrics talking about necrophilia and chaining woman to the toilet bowl, i will definetly not pay to hear tom araya badly yelling bad lyrics with word "fucking" in every verse over the most lazyass written slayer riffs ever that will probably get nominated for grammy.
ok this is enough i guess. i hope i didn't write too boring post, but i had a need to express my opinion this way.
p.s. if u have a chance to see them live, go to the gig. they still rip!

cheers Motorajzd for the very informative overview! I only have 80s stuff, and the last one I bought was the superb early 90s live double. Hopefully will be seeing them in November, seeing as my day at Bloodstock just fell apart at the planning stage dam it

Im not sure about Repentless (Slayers upcoming LP) or seeing the band live now. No Hanneman and no Lombardo equals a pale imitation of the band IMO. Lets hope Im proved wrong, but whilst I can accept no Hanneman (that's tragic and unavoidable and Holt was superb as a stand in at the Big 4 at Sonisphere a few yrs ago) no Lombardo as well just leaves me a little cold on the idea.

Thanks for the Slayer appraisal guys. Incredibly, I haven't followed their stuff since Reign In Blood! Seeing as I'll see 'em on the Motorboat, it's good to get an honest set of opinions and tips rather than aimlessly trawl through Wikipedia and You Tube. If I get a chance to ask them anything at the meet 'n' greet, what would you like to know?

With all respect to Jeff Hanneman, I think Gary Holt is an excellent replacement and more than makes up for the tragic loss of Jeff. But I have to agree losing (am I right in thinking he was sacked? ) Lombardo was a bad move musically. Having listened to the 2 tracks they have previewed though we should be in for another bloody good album and they have always been good when ive seen them ,so I think I should be ok for the upcoming tour. Plus they have Anthrax with them.Yep its gonna be a fucking good night

Is anybody else loving lamb of god's latest offering 'Sturm und Drang'? I've pretty much had it on repeat in my car for the last month, although it has just been replaced by Bad Magic for the time being...
