I managed at the very last moment to go to this gig, since I got injured to my left hand 10 days ago and I was afraid I wouldn't have been able to drive again in time for this show. I'm glad I did, since it was very exciting!
My girl and I met our friends @ the service station on the highway, they were waiting for me because they didn't know how to get to the town near Venice where the so-called "A Summer Day In Hell" was taking place.
So we got there and while we were still standing in line at the entry Hardcore Superstars started their set @ around 7.10pm. It didn't cause too much problem to me, as I had already seen HS twice (supporting AC/DC in Turin and on their own tour in Padua -> this was a killer one).
Luckily we missed just a couple of songs before we were in. The venue was very nice, basically a rectangular lawn surrounded by trees with the stage on one of the short sides and a large tent with tables serving as a restaurant. On the other sides, beer, t-shirt and indian stuff stalls. The official merchandise stand was in the back of the mixer desk. It was really hot and muggy, moreover the sun was setting but the stage was still sunny and the guys playing were really having a tough time. Jocke Berg (singer) was having troubles singing in the hot weather, and some songs were quite terrible, but he jumped on stage as usual without minding the 30°C temperature. Drummer Magnus Andreasson had to be replaced by a roadie during some songs due to cramps. A good show overall, but nothing to be remembered for.
Second band on the bill, Gamma Ray. Again, I had not big expectations from them, I like them a lot but having seen GR already 3 or 4 times before and having seen them headlining a couple of times I had already had what I needed. Moreover, I had already seen'em on the No World Order tour, so nothing new was coming. They opened their set with Rebellion In Dreamland and their sound was so-so, guitars were coming and going all the time. Among the song they played, I can remember (in no fucking order!) Ride The Sky, Valley Of The Kings, Somewhere Out In Space, Land Of The Free, Man On A Mission, Dethrone Tyranny, New World Order, Eagle and maybe some others which don't come to my mind right now. They closed again with Rebellion In Dreamland , with the "Have no fear, Rebellion is here" part. Kai Hansen's performance on vox was way below average, he (pretty much like Berg) suffered because of the hot weather and he was quite angry at the stage mixing desk guys: "thanks to you and a fuck off to the monitor guys which couldn't get me decent vocals but only some Woof woof". He then told us not to be sad: "I am sorry Italy lost, but remember, in the end, heavy metal always win!" (whatever he meant I find it quite laughable...) Kai also said they had never played before that area and he promised they would try and stop here more frequently in the future. I personally don't think we need it, because many bands play only Northern Italy and we are even luckier than fans living in other areas because a couple of venues frequently feature big bands like Angra, Grave Digger, Thin Lizzy, King Diamond, Symphony X. Also, the big Italian festivals are held in Milan (Gods Of Metal and No Mercy), while Southern Italy has maybe 1 or 2 famous bands per year. I talked to a Sardinian fan at the Gods Of Metal, and he said to me that that festival was probably going to be his only show of the year. By the way, crowd at this point was at around 1000, and very loud and supportive.
Night came down, Motorhead came on. "Buon giorno! [funny since it was 10pm, but Lemmy always welcomes the fans that way in Italy] We are Motorhead, and we're gonna fuck your head up!" And then came a sound rape the overall volume was almost inhuman, but that's what we all wanted! They banged "We Are Motorhead" as the opener, and proceeded to play all the classics: No Class, Bomber, Ramones ("Dedicated to Joey and Dee Dee, you know he's passed away too"), Going To Brazil, Civil War, Metropolis (someone wanted Capricorn as well.. ), Iron Fist, Sacrifice (with Mikkey Dee's great drum solo), Ace Of Spades, Overkill, Damage Case, Doctor Rock, Nothing Up My Sleeve, Killed By Death, Just Cos You Got The Power, God Save The Queen... they played only one new song but I don't remember its title. Again, the crowd was crazy for them and the band played the show everyone expected. Strangely Lemmy was convinced the show was being held in Padua (which is only 40 kms from the town they were playing) and at a certain point he started shouting "Padova!! Padova!!"
Then after the show my friends and I stayed there for a while sharing opinions (we all liked it!), eating something and having a beer or 2 (one of my buddies had drunk some 15 pints of beer that night) then we left.
