Hey everyone. Here's the first brief installment live from the Motorboat. I've just come from the pool deck after watching a phenomenal set from the Phil Campbell Allstarr Band. Opening with Cat Scratch Fever and taking in blistering covers of Dog-Faced Boy, Deaf Forever, Jumping Jack Flash and Communication Breakdown with surprise backing vocals from Joey Belladonna and a drunken Slash lookalike in the crowd; the band did not disappoint and had everyone in a feel good party mood. They even covered Nutbush City Limits sung as Phil said by our singer who will sing anything in any key any time any place! Bowie's Heroes? We got that too! As you may or may not know, the band includes the seed of Phil as his sons fill the drumstool, the bass and second guitar positions. They were spot on if self-effacing at times apologizing in advance in case they fucked up the songs but they needn't have because they didn't. The atmosphere is great here and kicked off with a fine set from Exodus who even played tracks from Bonded By Blood thirty years on. No Words followed them being the youngest band onboard and put in an energetic if repetitive medley of their tunes. I didn't bother with Corrosion Of Conformity or Hatebreed as they in considerately played when it was time to eat but the latter could be heard in the Crossings Restaurant the deck below as my wife and I enjoyed our fabulous dinner including swordfish and Thai fish cakes. We enjoyed watching the Filipina waitresses boosting energetically to the thud from above.
Now I must go and catch Slayer as they are just about to hit the stage...

Sorry this should be in gig reviews but the internet is erratic here and I nearly lost the post above for a moment and need a drink to recover!

Slayer were AWESOME! Intense, relentless, precision aural battery with unexpected melodic legacies in your ears. I found a place at the front of the balcony in the middle so took a full frontal battery for the team. I don't know their songs but I don't suppose that matters as the devastating battery that was their punishing landscape consumed my attention like a greedy leech sucking on my frontal lobe with greedy abandon.

Yes I used the word battery three times. Forgive me? Anyway, I ran back up to the top deck and caught Huntress giving a blinder of a set which included a Lemmy penned track called I Wanna Fuck You To Death! The banshee blonde singer told us he met up with her at The Rainbow and handed her a song written on two sheets of notepaper with that delightful title and told us it was the most romantic thing a boy had ever done for her! They played a powerful gig with more than a taste of old school heavy metal of the bewitching kind, the long tresses of her seemingly platinum hair encased variously in a black hood and silver cape before being flung free by her wilful abandon and complete absorption in her muse, gold ole heavy metal. Reminiscent of a young Doro if she'd been abusing deadly nightshade, she was ably backed by some tight licks and wonderful bursts of joyfully innocent soloing from a talented guitar duo. Check them out on You Tube if you haven't had the pleasure and boogie like it's 1982!

Ok folks, here's the second installment for anyone interested. It's a catch-up of sorts since we are now on the fourth day of the Motorboat cruise. Tuesday morning arrived all too quickly to recover fully from the night before, and after a hearty breakfast, we went ashore to Great Cay Stirrup in The Bahamas, Norwegian Cruise Line's private island. As we stood in line to board the tender boat to go ashore, a larger than life American lady, told us to look at her behind as she was wearing shorts with Asstodon written on the rear! Assssstodon! She proudly proclaimed. We arrived soon after on the island and headed for the beach where we saw Mikkey throwing an American football to one of his sons. He caught the ball on the end of his fingers and for one awful moment, he winced in pain. I called out, 'don't hurt him! He's the drummer!' He looked over and smiled. I took this as a cue to greet him and tell him I had some Svedka vodka to give him later which he seemed to appreciate.
Back onboard later on Tuesday evening, thanks to Luc from Luxembourg who patiently waited at the front of the queue for the Motorhead Meet'N' Greet in the Outriggers Lounge on Deck 11; I took my wife to have a picture taken with the band. We waited for an hour or so before Security came out to tell us no cameras were allowed, no talking to the band and go straight in and out of the room, stopping only to stand behind the band in a group of six so as many people could be accommodated. So I went in with my wife Nikki, Luc and three friend of his we chatted to in line. Hi to Sven, Tom and Jess!
Although this scenario may seem unfair, Tom made a reasonable point that the band simply could not afford to spend even two minutes talking to every Motorboater, since we learned that the line waiting out the lounge snaked all the way down to deck 3! In any case, the professional photo will be made freely available for viewing and download on the Official Motorhead Facebook page as happened last year.
So in we were whisked with the band seated on comfy chairs, with Lem looking a little pale and drawn. I heard the camera snap snap and then, just before we were ushered out, I quietly told Phil I would bring a goodie bag for the band to his set at 10pm that evening. One of the security gave me a death stare but Phil turned round and said 'Hi Ade! Cheers, I'll see you later!' Mikkey also turned and smiled as we left.

So at 10pm I went up to the top deck to watch the Phil Campbell Allstarr band to play a similar set to Monday night but just as enjoyable as Phil was in relaxed mood and rocked out with Deaf Forever from Monday replaced by Killed By Death with backing vocals provided by his long-time guitar tech Roger. There were frequent pauses between songs while Roger tuned Phil's guitars and Phil had some good-humoured banter with the crowd. We surprised him when he asked which band we'd enjoyed the most and I shouted YOU! Well of course I would say that since although I'd enjoyed Slayer and Huntress, it was his set that included the songs I know and love. In one of these brief breaks, I handed him the goodie bag with some presents for him, Lemmy and Mikkey. During the final song, a manic version of Communication Breakdown, there was a guest guitarist who I was unable to identify so will have to watch the video I took of this song again to work it out.

On Wednesday morning we arrived in Nassau and headed straight for the Hard Rock Cafe where we sampled a couple of strong cocktails, a Bahama Mamma and a Watermelon Cooler with more rum in than you can shake a stick at. I love walking round this chain to take in the impressive memorabilia on the walls and this place was no different, whether it be a typically over the top Gene Simmons guitar and outfit or a smashed up Kurt Cobain guitar. It seems a pity there isn't a Motorhead exhibit on display and I've been to a few Hard Rock Cafes around the world. Anyone seen Motorhead represented in a Hard Rick Cafe?

Had a great time meeting up at Hard Rock Cafe with Luc and his friend Vicki. She runs a Heavy Metal bar in Fredericksburg, Texas which sounds like a great place to visit for live bands, good sounds including Motorhead of course and great food and drink. I believe it's called Der Deuwel, which is Luxembourgisch for Holy Smoke! We went for Cuban coffee, Bahamian rum cake and to buy some Cuban cigars at the Cuban Cafe around the corner from the Jarley Davidson store in Nassau.

Whoops! Harley Davidson. Ok so on to the evening and the first Motorgig for my wife and gawd knows how many for me. The free RoCk N Roll onboard magazine left in our rooms featured a Lemmy interview in which he claimed they'd play a couple of new numbers on the Motorboat. Well guess what?! They didn't. Same set as Orlando and Pompano Beach last week but great nonetheless. On the way to the gig we passed through the casino and bumped into Mikkey. I introduced my wife and asked him if Phil had given him the Svedka vodka but alas no! I told him to demand it at all costs and wished him a good gig. We got good seats at the front of the balcony as my wife was not quite ready for the mosh pit!

Soon after we took our seats a photographer called Scott knelt in front of us to take some photos of the gig which he'll put up on his website. I'll post a link later so you can view them for yourself though I don't know what the deal is with his photos. So around 10.30 the band rolled out and went straight into Bomber followed swiftly by Stay Clean then Metropolis. Lem greeted us with 'Good evening shipmates!' Then dedicated Over The Top to himself after asking if we were having a good time, getting drunk etc. Phil hesitated briefly telling us he needed a drink to which Lem retorted that he would sit this one out. He seemed to be in good spirits throughout and even though the boat was visibly swaying from side to side tilting the audience with it, remarkably no one fell over. A Canadian Slayer fan wearing a Fuckin' Slayer tshirt tried to block my wife's view with his permanently surprised looking gal but this didn't last as wife objected strongly. The Bearded Canadian hillbilly politely demurred and normal view was restored despite his frequent thrusting groin all movements throughout the gig which mounted in hilarity as the gig progressed. He reminded me of one of the Bushwhackers if anyone remembers WWF.

Lost Woman Blues was very soulful and Phil's guitar solo spot was much better than Orlando. It was bluesy and unrushed and chilled the audience out before the onslaught that was to come. Rock It grooved as did Dr Rock which signaled the first really manic crowd surfing of the evening. My wife had never seen this before and I had to explain the mechanics of the mosh pit to her as she was both amused and astonished by the sight of the heaving mass below appearing to beat the shit out of each other. As fans went headfirst to the front of the stage and disappeared from view with just boots showing she really began to enjoy the show!
Mikkey's drum solo was impressive with the double bass drum mashup and speedy triplets punctuating the attack. The crowd clapped along to his tribal lead-in to his finale and the crowd roared their approval. Phil's guitar tech got a mention as Phil said he would be 43 in two weeks! 43 what? Asked Lemmy. 43 days old! deadpanned Phil. Just Cause You Got The Power seemed to be longer than usual before Lem announced that 'You may know this one' Ace Of Spades.
Pandemonium. All too soon, he announced that the next song would be the last one. The whole crowd seemed to say as one Aww! Like a naughty child being sent to bed early. 'Of course if you make a noise, we'll come back and do one more' quoth Lem. The crowd roared. 'Not yet! This one first' came his witty repartee. No Class. Which of course is a classy tune if ever there was one. Darkness. Cheers. Mot-Or-Head!!! Mo-Ter-head!!! Lemmy Leh-mee! Le-Mee! The audience volume increased. Whistles. More whistles. Lights. Lem introduces the band as usual. Overkill. Three verses. I danced like a mofo then Lem raised his bass machine gun style to kill us all in his name etc etc. The band took a bow then threw loads of picks into the audience. Then they were gone. We spoke to an Indonesian crew member who had also enjoyed the show and he explained he has a band at home who do Motorhead covers which makes you think just how far-tracing this band really is.
