Right, the unfortunate mid-week date and no chance of taking leave off work again made this a strange experience in stone-cold soberness, so please bear with me if I sound a bit less passionate than usual.
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from this gig especially given the latest health scares, but you know what, I shouldn't have worried that much as in spite of Lem looking and sounding a mere shadow of his former self (like death warmed up, frankly), the rest was pretty much business as usual: setlist unchanged but performance without major flaws - or at least none that I was aware of.
It's in between songs that perhaps the most noticeable change in band dynamics becomes obvious, with Phil now largely leading the all too familiar banter; but when the setlist still boasts the likes of Orgasmatron, No Class and Overkill I'm certainly not going to complain and seemingly no one else was either.
How long all this can continue though is another story for another less than perfect day.
Since the boyfriend was down with the flu (and thoroughly pissed off about missing out on the gig) I took the nephew instead as an early Xmas treat, who unlike me does not drag around a heavy bundle of Motörmemories and rather matter-of-factly summed up his night with "So what is it with all this hype about Motörhead live shows? I liked Saxon a lot better!" *sigh* kids these days.
I guess he's right though, the little prick. All these young'uns who've got no personal history of Motörshows and thus can't compare, have every right to be at least mildly bewildered with the still prevailing enthusiasm of us old farts when it comes to the band's current live performance.
So, what's the résumé? I was neither utterly disappointed nor remarkably thrilled with last night's gig and will certainly keep following the band as long as they exist, and beyond ..... just not live. But I think I've mentioned that before.
And here's of course hoping they'll stick it out just a little longer so all of you Britboys will be able to enjoy your shows come January next year.
