ctrl+c ctrl+v from petagno.dk Oct. 6th 2007 THE LAST “RIGHTS” Lemmy, if indeed these were your words? Just for the record I did ask you “personally” on 4 occasions for help, but nothing happened. Furthermore if you think that after 31 years as soldiers in the same army fighting liars, cheats and profiteers, that I am as lowly as they, then it’s you who has misunderstood things and not me! Then this is an even bigger tragedy then I expected? Truth is your manager did send me a document to sign asking me to hand over my copyrights and to insult me further there’s no receiving party signature or mention of a fee, which would be standard practice if such a transaction were to take place. I personally don’t give a damn on whose behalf he was acting, his, yours, Motorheads, your licensees, his or your successors. He sent it to me and his lame ass reason for doing so was - quote: So that we can go after these bootleggers who are ripping us off - unquote. He had absolutely no frigging reason to do this other than greed on someone’s behalf, after all you guys have been using my rights for the last 16 years worldwide on merchandise “free of charge with my supportive acceptance haven’t you? But I guess that just wasn’t enough eh? It never is with Greed - is it? A Colossal misunderstanding? Lemmy this is a colossal disgrace, a cold calculated take over bid on someone’s behalf to own it all, and in the process disinherit my family / successors…No way Jose’! Now listen up mate this is the last time I’m going to state it. The rights to these images are mine! I alone created them and I alone own the copyrights! Forever! They go to my successors nobody else’s understand? Well, I’ll make it real easy for you and everyone else concerned. Below* you will find a word for word copy of the document (which started this mess) I received from your manager with your Name and Occupation on it instead of mine, please sign it and send it to me a.s.a.p. I mean you’re not using them, and I could do with the extra money. I quit and I take all my copyrights with me as they are lawfully mine to do as I deem proper. NOTICE: Anyone using these images or a reasonable likeness of them for any reason whatsoever from this day forth - Oct. 6th 2007 - without my written permission to do so is infringing on my rights and liable. Just cos’ they “think” they got the power - that don’t mean they got the copyrights! Lastly: Todd real families do not behave in this manner. - Joe Petagno ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * To whom it may concern, 6th of October, 2007 I confirm and agree that: I have been working as a bass player /singer / songwriter in the band Motorhead since (insert date) All the songs I have written for Motorhead albums and single projects, is original, and worldwide exclusive rights are assigned to Joe Petagno for commercial usage. I have therefore granted to no third party any rights, and have not entered into or assumed, and will not enter into or assume, any agreement or obligation which would or might prevent or limit the exploitation by Joe Petagno and his licensees and successors in the title of the songs as he may think fit for bona fide commercial purposes in connection with his business. Signed …………………………… Ian Kilmister ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ctrl+c ctrl+v from another place: As many of you know, we have been working with Joe Petagno for 31 years. We have always treated Joe fairly, and I would like to stress that at no time did my manager demand what Joe thinks he demanded - it is all a colossal misunderstanding. We have always loved his artwork, obviously, and if he now decides to stop working with us, we have no choice but to use someone else. However...if he will not even discuss this personally and try to work things out, I think it's a tragedy. If Joe will continue with us, no one would be more delighted than me. If it's goodbye, Joe, I wish you well, but I hope, even at this late stage, to be reconciled and to continue our association. Sincerely. Lemmy Kilmister.

I get the feeling the next album will sport a band photo on its sleeve.

Now that you make me think about that... that's entirely possible. Bad move in my opinion. Only Motorhead band-picture cover art that I remember looking good was the Ace of Spades one. Both the Overnight Sensation and (to a degree) Iron Fist cover art are rather... meh. Overnight Sensation, in particular, was meant to show that the band was still on its feet despite the wurzel defection. Bad choice. You're Motorhead! You don't need to prove that you're still on yer feet! I really want the band to invest in a new, outrageously good, splendid Snaggletooth cover.
Now question: does Petagno retain the right to his previous Snagg pictures or on the very concept of Snaggletooth?

I think Petagno does have the rights. Quote: "I quit and I take all my copyrights with me as they are lawfully mine to do as I deem proper." Lemmy talks about "using someone else" so that means -I think- another artist. No bandphoto. A lot of people weren´t happy about the BMTD-cover. So why not skip the artwork and just release a cd without the cover, only a motorhead-logo on it. It´s the music that counts, right?

I see albums as so much more than just the collection of a dozen or so songs. The visuals, the words, the emotions conveyed... It's more than just music. I think a nice visual context can really help solidify an album. Take the art for Inferno, for example. It adds so much to the intense feeling of the album. Maybe it's just me, though.
It's one thing having a cut and paste cover, and a proper photo. I don't remember anyone complaining about the Ace of Spades, sleeve. I think, at this point, a band photo on the cover would be rejuvenating in certain respects. I'll be the first to say it, but I wasn't getting kind of tired of Snaggletooth, anyway.

I see what you mean Mike. That's one of the reasons I've been resisting the lure of iTunes so long. And then, of course, I fell for it. But I still make it a point to buy the actual CDs of my fave bands.
I want a new Snagg.

I really hope that they sort it out - and soon. Joe's artwork has been a huge part of the band, and though the band would continue, it just won't be the same. Yes, it is the music that is more important, but let us be realistic here, how many more studio albums do we think the band, and especially Lemmy have left in them?
Two at the most I think, so why fuck Joe off at this stage? It just doesn't make any sense to me!

but let us be realistic here, how many more studio albums do we think the band, and especially Lemmy have left in them? Do you really want to make me cry? Considering the silence that's following this breakup either the thing is settled/settling or lost forever. I don't think it was Motorhead's intention to piss Joe off. I really think it was management out of control. Lemmy is old indeed, and as Cope pointed out recently, really looks fragile. It wouldn't surprise me if the whole monster were slipping out of his control. Okay, I'm here sobbing to myself if anyone wants me.

This certainly looks quite final doesn't it?
Have we any idea what started the spat?

Yes we do, read the first post on this page to read Joes version about it. There's no official version from Motörhead at this point as far as I know.

This is the interesting part, Joe re-wrote it to fit Lemmy... * To whom it may concern, 6th of October, 2007 I confirm and agree that: I have been working as a bass player /singer / songwriter in the band Motorhead since (insert date) All the songs I have written for Motorhead albums and single projects, is original, and worldwide exclusive rights are assigned to Joe Petagno for commercial usage. And again, I understand that this memo is what kickstarted it all but why was the memo sent?
