Beer!
Post by juggernaut on Sept 14, 2002, 12:59pm

Continued from Dubbed movies (!)

Beer, seems like it's worth discussing, we had a little tread about Spansih beer but this is for all beers...
Tell the others what you tried and what you thought about it.

I tried the Holy (Gr)ail the other day It's ok. I also like the Boddingtons pale ale as well.
Right now I'm drinking a Carlsberg Black Gold, good enough if you're thirsty and don't want too much taste...

Re: Beer!
Post by admin on Sept 15, 2002, 2:34pm

Ahhh, a subject very close to my heart. I'm drinking Stella Artois right now. That's always been a favourite. God's own lager. If I want lager and there's no Stella I'll go for Kronenberg which I think is a decent substitute.

I often go for dry cider though, Strongbow, Scrumpy Jack and Blackthorn are my usual choices. I can't stand sweet cider.

Also Guiness is oft' supped, although I don't drink it quite as often as I used to. I go for Guiness in my local Club 'cos it's the only drinkable pint in there.

Drinks I won't touch:

Carling Black label
Heineken
Labbatt
Budweiser

These all taste like piss to me. The Heineken we get in Blighty is about 3.5% abv. I like my beer to be at least 5% if possible.

Being a member of American Dog,life would cease to exist without BEEER!Me and Michael are tight wads so we drink the cheapest swill we can find(usually Milwaukees best light, not bad)but we drink enough that it really does'nt matter!I try to buy one brand a week I hav'nt had yet. This week it's LEINENKUGEL'S amber light.I like all their flavors.I've had some wheat or white BEEERS lately that I really liked.Pete's Wicked Helles is real good too.
And I'll never turn down a Guiness.I'll let you know what the next primo brew I come across is!!

Re: Beer!
Post by jeffdart on May 5, 2003, 6:30pm

In my days of drinking (Been teetotal 1 year and 6 months) I went through a load of beer and other stuff with alcoholic content.
Courage Best, Bass, Worthington, Grolsch (fucking evil that one was), Gold Label (worse than Grolsch) and something called DogBolter which was a local brew in a Pub that was also a music venue.
DogBolter was 5.5% and a thick beer. 5 pints of that and u were drunk, 7 pints and u were pissed..anymore and well I can't remember much.
Though beer was not my downfall to teetotal, my downfall was Jack Daniels Whiskey (nearly killed me).

I have tried them, and I agree, they tasted awfulback then, and now they are 10.3% alcohol, so they are probably not better.

I'm off to the store, got to get a coldplate.
That's the only thing I miss.

Don't they sell it in Holland?
Re: Beer!

No they don't sell it here, well there must be an English pub somewere where they do and I think there is a Marks & Spencer in Amsterdam.

Also use to drink White lightning cider. A friend of mine went to England, asked her to bring a bottle back but she couldn't find it anymore.
So she gave me a cadbury's egg instead?
Tasted good though

?

Only Belgian beer mentioned is Stella? :o No Duvel? No Orval? No Grimbergen, Leffe, Verboden Vrucht, Rodenbach, Ciney, Chimay, Westmalle,...? Not even a simple Jupiler or Maes?

tip: never try Cristal Alken. They give it at Pukkelpop festival and that's one of the main reasons people bring their own drinks there :D

I had an Adam's Apple today. Not bad. In the Irish pub in Ghent they give Strongbow, I think. But I'm not really a cider guy. Is cider beer? I have seen it listed under beers, but somehow it doesn't fit with my conception of what a beer is.

Nope because they don't sell it here, not sure if I want to now

;D

I drank 'kersenbier' as in Cherrie beer yesterday though,
Thats nice, I think the official name is Kriek.

Nice cool and a sweet taste, lovely drink for in the summer
Re: Beer!
Post by chrisvosje on Aug 11, 2003, 12:26pm

Kriek isn't too bad, I used to drink it regularly. Which brand was it? Nowadays I prefer Gueuze, usually the Belle-Vue Gueuze.
Belle-Vue is owned by the family Vandenstock, president of RSC Anderlecht :D

I had a Verboden Vrucht this weekend. Oh, and an Irish Red, I had never tried that before. I wanted a nice cold drink to cool off in this heat and what do I get? Warm beer. >:(
Re: Beer!
Post by ziggystardust on Aug 11, 2003, 3:31pm

I don't know which brand it was, it was of the tap.

Irish red is one of my favorites,
I always have a few "cooled" bottles in my fridge ;D

or "Hoegaarden" blond beer also a great summer drink with a slice of Lemon!

I tried a Kilkenny at the Irish pub yesterday. Not bad. Tastes a bit like Palm but too little bubbles, I mean: it makes me think of how a Palm would taste if you would pour it in a glass, leave it standing there for about half an hour, put the glass in the fridge to cool off again, and then offer it - all that with the taste not completely gone.

Ah, one of the finest blond beers. Made for enjoyment, not really to get drunk on (but that can be a pleasant side-effect).

Many English coming to Belgium order one, think it's just a pils, and drink it like they drink English beer, one after the other. After a while we find them lying in a puddle of vomit. ;D

I had a cider today and suddenly I remembered why it is a great unknown field for me.
I can't remember how old I was, but I was in France with my parents. I drank my first cider then. Afterwards I was sick as hell. I won't go into details, but the car smelt for weeks :o. It took me a very long time before I tried it again. Must have blocked out the memory of the taste.

I was wondering: is French cider the same thing as the cider I get at the Irish pub? I think that cider is listed under wine in France, but I'm not sure about that.
Re: Beer!
Post by admin on Aug 25, 2003, 12:54pm

Apparently cider is made by a similar process to wine.

I think

I've really been enjoying these English ales lately :P, such as Young's and, especially, Old Speckled Hen. Expensive but WORTH it. We've got one in Wisconsin, also, that is really good called New Glarus. I am off the lagers, that's for sure. Too gut-rot inducing and the hangovers off that shit are miserable. Wondered (well, knew) why I was always chomping on antacid tablets. Ahhh ... in the words of Redd Foxx: "Drinkin' less, but enjoyin' it more!" ;)
Re: Beer!
Post by chrisvosje on Nov 8, 2003, 10:45am

I was in the Ardennes this week. As expected, the beer was good.
McChouffe is not bad, but I prefer La Chouffe (but that's probably just because I prefer blonde beer)
Ciney Blonde and Rochefort were very good, but my favourite was, is, and will be Orval.
During my visit to the monastery, I was amazed to find out that Maredsous is brewed by the same guys that make the delicicious Duvel, Moortgat (a family with a very questionable reputation: extremist right-wing sympathies - but that doesn't change the taste of their beer, and they've been taken over by Interbrew anyway).

This song just popped up in my head:

BELGIAN ASOCIALITY
JUPILER REGGAE
I was walking through the street one day
I saw a man with a bottle in his hand
I went to the man and I asked him in his face
He, man, what beer are you drinking there ?
You must be joking was what he said
only one beer goes in my head
you know, I am a Jupiler man
drink it as much as I can

I am a jupiler man, love it as much as I can
a Jupiler man, a Jupiler man

Jupiler, Jupiler, Jupiler
that's my beer, for that I care
Jupiler, Jupiler, Jupiler
Jupiler, Jupiler, Jupiler

I was running through the street that day
I was in search for a bottle of beer
I went to the shop and asked the keeper there
for me a bottle of Jupiler
You must be joking was what he said
there was no other beer you should get
You know, I am a Jupiler man
love it as much as I can

So I was walking further on that day
with in my hand this bottle of beer
there was a man that walked right up to me
and asked what beer are you drinking there
You must be joking was what I said
only one beer goes in my head
You know, I am a jupiler man
Drink it as much as I can

I was born in the country of beer, so I love all kinds of beer (as long as it's worth the honorary title of 'beer'), but I really hate white beer - I don't know why: I like blond, brown, amber beers, but no white.

Had an Orval today, without a doubt the best beer in the world.

Oh, and Duvel IS GREAT, even though the brewery - Moortgat - is known to sponsor right-wing extremist fascists: the classic question of good and evil (btw, 'duvel' is dialect for 'duivel', the Dutch word for 'devil').

I have a Hoegaarden Grand Cru waiting for me (I hate white beer - the regular Hoegaarden is white beer - but the Grand Cru, woohoo). I'm leaving for a holiday in Crete in two days and I have to say goodbye to my apartment in style ;D

Thanks.

Beer in Crete is either Mythos or Amstel (Heineken as well, but you already know what I think of that). A small beer is 33cl, a large one half a liter. But raki and ouzo are cheaper there ;D

Re: Beer!

they serve ouzo in greek restaurants (at least in Holland) as a welcome drink...went out for dinner to a greek restaurant back in high school with my class..two dudes drank six or seven shots of ouzo (got em from the people who declined drinkin it..) and they were puking within ten minutes..first the toilets..then one went outside, crashed to the ground and fell asleep..I just enjoyed my meal... ;)
Re: Beer!

OUZO. OOOOOOHHHHH yes that stuff can mess you up good an propper. I can"t recall an afternoon some time back when we thought it would be a good idea to down a few bottles of Ouzo on a hot summers day. Big mistake cuz if you reread the second line of this post it about sums up the afternoon ;D

Also I can"t remember a number of times I"v chosen to befrend the odd bottle THUNDERBIRD. About time I rekindeled my frendship with both. Just for old time sakes you"ll understand ;)

We did a submarine the other day...

For the one who don't know:

Submarine:
Take a large boot-shaped glass with beer and let a small glass (6 cl) with Jägermeister or vodka or whatever sink in the glas before drinking.

If this feels too weak and you are a real macho man:

Re: Beer!
Post by numbergirl on Jan 29, 2005, 2:00pm

I've never met Jack and I'm not keen on spirits, but I could never manage 10 pints.

Gosh, you must have hollow legs, Jug!.
Re: Beer!
Post by juggernaut on Jan 31, 2005, 7:06am

not 10 pints, that I couldn't drink... ten cans I meant so that's 3.33 litres, = 7 pints. That's a good eavning if you just intend to get a bit light headed, for the complete drunkness I settle for one, maximum two beers. And of course I wash the beer dwon with some spirits, rum & coke preferred.

BTW I don't have hollow legs, but if you see me you understand where the beer is stored...
Strange how the chestmuscles are resting around the waist...
Re: Beer!

Relaxed muscle and thick boned, young man.
Obviously needs that amount of beer.
I think my limits about 3 pints of Stella (6 bottles) but there's a risk it may want to come back up again so I have to be careful.
I don't like waste.

Uncommon in London ?...really ?

I'm surprised,

I've always got along really well with my neighbours...in fact for New Years Eve last year we actually closed our road off & had a 'Street Party'...almost 30 households alltogether !!...I can go away on holidays & know that my neighbours will keep an eye out on the house (security), collect me mail, mow lawns, feed me dog & water me garden...when they go away I do the same for them.

...I enjoy most of me neighbours company more than some of me own family relations 8-)

With neighbour like yours, who needs family?
It used to be a friendly place over 20 years ago but nowadays London is too over-populated with so many unfriendly faces. Old folks are weary to smile and others are frightened to talk because they may not speak English. Neighbours keep themselves to themselves in my town, with maybe a hello or a smile on a rare occasion.

No worries...
Remembering aint the important thing here, we drink to get to a lower level of intelligence, and therefore be able to solve the problems of the world.
The trouble in Iraque? No problem, just give us Boneshaker DVD and a bottle of rum and some beer and we'll have it solved before Overkill!

Our girlfriends aren't worried, they both know that even if we did manage to get to Gothenburg city nobody would speak to us, two shitfaced drunk men in black leatherjackets and almost shaved heads ain't all womens dreams you know...

What a way to go!
Hope you guys bring some photos back for those who can't make it.
It sounds like a fantastic festival.

Travelled up to watched a gig at the old venue of Iron Maiden last week. I thought it was going to be a heavy rock night, but the band was like karaoke with a bloody drum machine and taped frigging female vocals.
What a contrast!
Wish I was there.
I'm gonna have to miss the London Motorhead gig too.
Hubby's death through too much bass coming out of one of the speakers at a gig. He'll probably blow the other one at a Motorhead gig.
So I have to stay at home and listen to the one album that I have of them.............
feeling sorry for me yet?

I celebrated the election of Westvleteren 12 as best beer in te world by having one. Aaah, the pleasures of living in THE beer country (I grew up about 40 km from Westvleteren - no way to get that beer, unless you drive to the abbey. I know of only 3 bars in Ghent that have it).
